In 1839, Briton Sir William Robert Grove discovered that hydrogen and
oxygen could be combined to produce water and an electric current. In
the late 1950s, Francis Bacon's research team developed a more advanced
fuel cell. This design was used for NASA's Apollo moon missions and Skylab
programs.
Today, fuel cell technology is being brought back to earth to power everything
from cars and buses, to homes and businesses, and even cellular phones
and laptop computers.
